Hamilton Road
MPD was commissioned in 2020 to complete a series of outbuildings and swimming pool to ‘accompany ‘ an existing homestead (built in 2018). Each structure differing in form and function but with a connectedness that comes from a familiar rural language.
Studio/Guest house
Referencing a ‘ modest ‘ trampers/shepherds hut the 30 sqm space was left as a single room to accommodate multiple uses, whether it be as overflow guest room, office, art studio, etc. The studio features an asymmetric roofline combined with a multi width / multi directional rainscreen. A large fully opening window is extended beyond the footprint to accommodate a window seat which can double up as extra sleeping space.
A finely proportioned steel and timber entrance awning creates a sheltered threshold.
Rough Sawn timber floors along with band sawn sarked walls and ceiling complete the interior palette.
Pool & Pool House
Two-thirds of the 29 sqm space is open to the pool area (enclosed on 3 sides) creating a sheltered seating area along with a small bar nock. Totara timber decks link the pool house to the limestone pool surround and extends into the covered seated area.
A Totara pergola offers shade on the western elevation. The shower room and toilet occupy the rest of the space and this is linked to the studio via deck and large stone steps.
Like the studio the pool house is clad in western red cedar (NZ grown) but this time in a traditional weatherboard profile to match the main house. The limestone floor matches the pool surround.
12m x 4.5m concrete pool (Mobius Pools) Bespoke steel fence fabricated from vertical angle section.
Potting Shed
Very much the working space for clients who are avid gardeners, the potting shed is a 28 sqm with an asymmetric roofline combined with lean-to firewood storage.
Traditional board and batten cladding with found kauri windows all painted a custom green. Limestone floor matching shower room and pool surround. Unlined interior with custom made benches and shelving.
Raised vegetable garden beds in corten steel are central to all 3 structures and linked by decks, and stone steps.
